Today, it was reported that two new teams will be added to the conference via Big Ten conference expansion starting in 2024. Alongside the UCLA Bruins and the USC Trojans, the Oregon Ducks and Washington Huskies are headed to Big Ten country after the coming season. This is massive news for the conference as a whole and its two-time reigning champions, the Michigan Wolverines. Here is all of the Michigan football history you need to know against these four former PAC-12 programs.
Michigan football history against all four new Big Ten conference expansion teams
Next fall, the Big Ten is going to be looking a little bit different when it adds four former PAC-12 programs (maybe even more by then). Let’s start with USC and take a look at how Michigan football has performed against these newcomers in the past (via Winsipedia).
USC Trojans
The last time that Michigan football played against USC was in the 2007 Rose Bowl game, where the Wolverines came up short in Lloyd Carr’s second-to-last season at the helm in Ann Arbor. So far, these two have faced off 10 times, with the Trojans holding a 6-4 lead over the Wolverines all-time. Additionally, USC currently has a 3-game winning streak against the Maize and Blue, which could change in 2024 when Michigan heads to LA.
The last time Michigan football beat USC was under former head coach Bo Schembechler, when the Wolverines took home a 22-14 victory over the Trojans in the 1989 Rose Bowl game.
UCLA Bruins
Michigan football has far less notable history with UCLA than it does with USC, but it is still there. The last time these two played was in September 2000 when the Bruins earned their 3rd win over Michigan all-time. Still, the Wolverines maintain an impressive 8-3 advantage over the Bruins, with their most recent win coming in the form of a 38-9 victory back in 1996.
Michigan football is currently scheduled to host UCLA in Ann Arbor next year, marking the first time that the Bruins have come to Michigan since the 1990s.
Oregon Ducks
The Michigan football history against the Oregon Ducks is interesting. Unlike UCLA and USC, the Oregon Ducks are a relatively newer team on the scene among major college football powers. However, they still lay claim to the most recent win in their series with the Wolverines.
As of now, Michigan football leads 3-2 all-time over the Ducks. However, since the turn of the century, Oregon has been successful against Michigan, with a 2-0 record in their matchups in 2003 and 2007, making things interesting with their addition to the Big Ten in 2024.
Washington Huskies
Unlike the other three new Big Ten conference expansion teams (all coming from the PAC-12), Michigan football has the most recent win over the Washington Huskies, which came in the form of a 21-point victory back in 2021. In the all-time series, the Wolverines also lead with an 8-5 advantage right now — Michigan is riding a two-game winning streak into the 2024 season, and claimed major Rose Bowl wins over Washington in 1981 and 1993.
