Michigan football QB JJ McCarthy is entering his second season as the Wolverines’ full-time starter. After guiding his team to the winningest season in program history last fall, culminating in a 13-1 record, a Big Ten title, and a College Football Playoff appearance, McCarthy’s 2023 quarterback rankings in various outlets still fail to reflect his perceived talent level. Despite his impressive performance, McCarthy’s rank falls short of many expectations — during a media availability session yesterday, when questioned about his thoughts on where he ranks, McCarthy had the perfect response.
Michigan football QB blows off national 2023 quarterback rankings
Despite being arguably the top quarterback in the Big Ten conference, McCarthy is placed barley inside of the top 10 in nearly all national rankings (and is excluded from the top 10 in some as well). However, during yesterday’s media availability, when McCarthy was asked about his thoughts on his ranking, he provided a simple yet perfect response — he remains unfazed by the rankings, even though he could easily be considered the No. 1 quarterback in the conference and one of the best QBs in the nation.
“I don’t get too caught up in the rankings and stuff like that because most of them go off of stats, most of them go off of little stuff that’s out of your control,” said third-year Michigan football QB JJ McCarthy at Schembechler Hall on Monday.
“The only thing that I focus on is being the best quarterback I can be for this football team because that’s what matters, that’s what’s going to get the wins. I don’t care about being top 5, top 3, or top 1, none of that because that’s not winning football games. I want to win football games and when all that stuff pans out it pans out, all that stuff is out of my control so I just try to focus on what I can control.”
JJ McCarthy gives Michigan its best shot at a national title
Regardless of where the national media ranks JJ McCarthy, he is the best Michigan football QB for the job, and gives the Wolverines their best shot at winning a national title. This fall, the Maize and Blue will be looking to put it all together under McCarthy’s guidance, perhaps reclaiming the top spot in all of college football for the first time since the late 1990s.
