Today, second-year offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore addressed the media ahead of this weekend’s bout against Nebraska. According to Moore, the Michigan football quarterback battle, which has been ongoing for quite some time now, has a new frontrunner to back up JJ McCarthy on Saturdays. As of today, Indiana transfer QB Jack Tuttle seems to be the next man up.

Update on the Michigan football quarterback battle

The backup quarterback battle has been a hot topic among Michigan football fans. Seeing as JJ McCarthy is the Wolverines’ bona fide QB1 this fall, everyone is hoping that the backup quarterback will only be needed in garbage time situations to close out games.

Per Sherrone Moore, Jack Tuttle seems to be QB2

Still, it is a crucial role for the Wolverines to fill, and according to Sherrone Moore, Jack Tuttle seems to be pulling away with the job heading into Week 5 against Nebraska.

“We’re still working on it right now,” Sherrone Moore said of the quarterback battle in Ann Arbor. “Looks like it’ll be (Jack) Tuttle, but we’ll still work on it and see how that goes.”

Many candidates still looking to back up JJ McCarthy this year

Other contenders for the role include Jayden Denegal (sophomore), Alex Orji (sophomore), and Davis Warren (junior). All four backup QBs have gotten reps this fall, though with a plethora of Big Ten experience and more, it has long seemed like Michigan football would be favorable to Tuttle taking on this role.

So far, the transfer QB has only gotten one rep for Michigan football — it was an impressive scramble, though a late hit out of bounds injured the first-year Wolverine, and we have not seen him since. According to Jim Harbaugh, Tuttle “dodged a bullet” with injury on that play and should be ready to go again.
