This year’s Michigan football quarterback room is projected to be the best in the Big Ten conference and is led by third-year Wolverine, JJ McCarthy. Behind McCarthy—a potential first-round NFL Draft pick—are two more talented QBs: Davis Warren and Jack Tuttle.

Michigan football quarterback room ranks top 20 nationally, No. 1 in the Big Ten

Recently, Phil Steele ranked the top quarterback rooms in the Big Ten conference and in all of college football, with Michigan football coming in among the nation’s best. Ahead of the 2023 season, the Wolverines’ talented QB room is pinned among the nation’s top 20 and is the No. 1 group in the Big Ten conference. Steele has Michigan at No. 17 in his preseason rankings.

The headline of the 2023 Michigan football quarterback room is JJ McCarthy, a junior, who is heading into a season full of massive expectations after taking over as the Wolverines’ full-time starter during Week 2 of the 2022 season. For the Maize and Blue, keeping JJ’s jersey clean and giving him time to make throws will be essential for the program’s ultimate success this fall.

That said, the Wolverines have a pair of quite talented quarterbacks behind McCarthy, waiting in the wings just in case of an incident this fall. Perhaps the most notable Michigan football backup quarterback is Jack Tuttle, a veteran Big Ten QB who just arrived in Ann Arbor by way of the transfer portal. That said, Davis Warren is also fully capable of leading the offense if need be.

While the Michigan football quarterback room is undoubtedly one of the best in the country, its ranking as the top group in the Big Ten can be partially credited to a great deal of turnover seen throughout the conference. Michigan State, Penn State, Ohio State, Iowa, Wisconsin, and more will all have new faces under center this fall, meaning the Maize and Blue will have a distinct advantage of experience under center for the 2023 season, which could lead the Wolverines to yet another Big Ten Championship.
