New 2023 Heisman Trophy odds have been released by FanDuel and other sportsbooks after an exciting slate of Week 7 matchups. For Michigan football quarterback JJ McCarthy, who has been a top contender all year long, he has seen a new massive jump in the 2023 odds, now coming in at No. 2 nationally.

The 2023 Heisman Trophy race is still seemingly anyone’s ball game right now, though all season long, JJ McCarthy has been a top contender in the weekly odds. That said, McCarthy just saw a massive leap in the Week 8 odds, going from a top 10 contender to the 2nd-most-likely player to win college football’s most prestigious individual award.

While former Indiana quarterback and current Washington Husky Michael Penix Jr. is the No. 1 player in the Heisman race right now, by quite a bit, JJ McCarthy is in that conversation as well. Penix (+140) is still substantially further ahead of McCarthy (+1000), who is tied with Oklahoma quarterback Dillon Gabriel (+1000) for the second-best odds nationally.

Yesterday, Michigan football didn’t ask JJ McCarthy to do much; however, he still played a massive role in Michigan’s impressive 52-7 win over the Indiana Hoosiers. He completed 14 of his 17 passes for 222 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions — he is up to 1,512 yards, 14 touchdowns, and three interceptions on the season thus far.

Heading into Week 8 against Michigan State, JJ McCarthy’s passer rating of 92.6 is the best in the country. Winning the Heisman Trophy as a quarterback in Michigan’s offense is a tall task, though over halfway through the year, it appears that McCarthy is still heavily in the conversation.
