The Michigan football quarterbacks room is one of the best in the nation this year and is being pinned as the No. 1 room in the Big Ten conference. For the Maize and Blue, it’s clear that JJ McCarthy is going to lead the way, yet other rising stars (such as transfer Jack Tuttle, sophomores Alex Orji and Jayden Denegal, and more) are also standing out. At the start of spring ball, McCarthy addressed the media and confidently stated that the quarterbacks “look phenomenal” heading into the season.
Michigan football quarterbacks room has a ton of depth
This year’s Michigan football quarterbacks are a reason for excitement in Ann Arbor; in fact, they’re talented enough that Jim Harbaugh has a “secret plan” for Alex Orji to see a secondary role as a kick returner if the blocking schemes can get worked out.
Behind third-year star quarterback JJ McCarthy is a plethora of talent, though the primary names competing for the backup role are Davis Warren and Jack Tuttle. Behind them, Jayden Denegal continues to turn heads this fall, and Orji remains in the mix as well.
JJ McCarthy confident in new quarterbacks coach Kirk Campbell
This year is the Wolverines’ first season with Kirk Campbell as the QB coach. Following the firing of Matt Weiss back in January, Michigan football quickly promoted Campbell, who has been turning heads on the recruiting trail as well as in practice so far and has made a world of difference for the Wolverines.
“Coach (Kirk Campbell), he’s a guy that I was working with towards the back end of last year so we already had a little bit of a relationship,” Michigan football quarterback JJ McCarthy said. “It carried over to a lot more than just a coach-player relationship, he really wants to know what I’m thinking, he wants to implement stuff that I see on the field. That’s one of the biggest things that you’ve gotta have with the quarterback-quarterback coach relationship. Plus, the dude is knowledgeable as heck about the pass game and about football in general.”
The quarterback room is looking ‘phenomenal’
Aside from himself and Michigan football quarterbacks coach Kirk Campbell, how does the QB room look?
“It’s just been great to be able to learn from him every day,” JJ McCarthy continued. “The other quarterbacks in the room, they look phenomenal — Jayden Denegal, Alex Orji — night and day last year to this year, so it’s just been great to see the progress in all of us.”
