Last night, Michigan football recruiting landed its 24th hard commit in the 2024 cycle with the addition of four-star in-state linebacker Jeremiah Beasley. The Wolverines now boast the nation’s No. 3 recruiting class, trailing only Ohio State and Georgia in the current composite rankings. Alongside the Maize and Blue, numerous other top current and future Big Ten programs are engaged in a fierce arms race on the recruiting trail.

Michigan football recruiting battling with top Big Ten programs

As I previously stated, Michigan football recruiting ranks No. 3 in the current composite rankings. Ahead of Michigan at No. 2 in the rankings are the Ohio State Buckeyes, who are looking to get back on track after suffering two straight blowout losses against Jim Harbaugh.

Three spots below Michigan football, the Penn State Nittany Lions currently rank No. 6 in the composite rankings, meaning nearly half of the Big Ten East sits in the top 6 nationally. Just behind Penn State, the USC Trojans (who will be joining the Big Ten conference next year and will host the Wolverines in LA during the 2024 season) rank at No. 7 in the country.

The future of the Big Ten is bright due to major recruiting success

Taking a moment to look outside the top 10, two more Big Ten programs appear among the nation’s top 15: Nebraska (13) and Minnesota (15). Additionally, the Purdue Boilermakers, reigning Big Ten West champions, currently rank No. 19, closely followed by the Iowa Hawkeyes at No. 25.

It is evident that the entire Big Ten is recruiting at an elite level. The conference accounts for the majority of the top 3 nationally and half of the top 6. Even future programs, such as USC, are recruiting incredibly well in the 2024 cycle, further highlighting the tough battles ahead for Jim Harbaugh and the Michigan football program in the coming years.

Michigan football needs to continue its current recruiting success for the months to come in order to remain competitive for future Big Ten and national titles. So far so good for the Wolverines on the recruiting trail as we turn the page into July.
