Today, we met with Michigan football star Blake Corum, who is prepping for the Wolverines’ Week 8 bout against the Michigan State Spartans in East Lansing. Corum, who was a Heisman Trophy contender last fall, knows that quarterback JJ McCarthy is among the nation’s top contenders right now — here is his take on the Heisman race.

Michigan football star Blake Corum chimes in on JJ McCarthy’s Heisman chances

JJ McCarthy is coming off an impressive game against Indiana, and while his stats are not quite where other top Heisman contenders are right now, this is largely due to the fact that McCarthy has yet to play a snap in the fourth quarter. Despite this, McCarthy is currently listed as the No. 2 player in the race, per FanDuel’s updated odds.

If you ask Blake Corum, there is no doubt that Michigan football quarterback JJ McCarthy should be in the race, perhaps even the nation’s Heisman leader right now.

“Yeah, I think he should be up there. Obviously, I don’t know the stats, we haven’t played too many fourth quarters, so obviously he might not be putting up the yards that maybe some other quarterbacks are, but when it comes to completion rate? I saw it on Twitter the other day, but he’s first, first, second, second, and something, you know, he’s on fire. He’s a field general when he’s on the field. He knows how to make a play out of nothing. When the pocket collapses, he can escape and make plays, like he did with Colston (Loveland), and pitching it to Dono (Donovan Edwards).

“He’s a heck of a player. Where he was last year to this year, I’m proud of him, but I expect nothing less, just because the type of person he is, the work that I see him put in, the film that I see him watch, he’s amazing, man. So when it comes to the Heisman, I say, put him up there, man. He deserves it. He deserves it.”

Michigan football, Blake Corum, and JJ McCarthy re-take the field this weekend for a night game in East Lansing against Michigan State. The weekend after, Michigan has a well-deserved bye week.
