Jim Harbaugh is known as a “football guy,” and rightfully so — he embodies the grittiness and passion that the game requires. After the Maryland win, the Wolverines’ 1,000th victory in program history, Michigan football star linebacker Michael Barrett had the perfect gift for Coach Harbaugh, something that Harbaugh now has on display in his office at Schmbechler Hall.

Against Maryland, a weekend before Michigan’s impressive 30-24 victory over Ohio State, Michael Barrett had an impressive game, leading to a 31-24 victory in College Park, which kept the Wolverines’ record perfect heading into “The Game.”

During the Wolverines’ Week 12 win at Maryland, Michael Barrett broke his helmet while making a tackle, creating the perfect gift for Head Coach Jim Harbaugh. Below is a photo of the broken helmet, which is now promptly displayed in Jim Harbaugh’s office inside of Schmbechler Hall.

“Whenever I have a player that breaks a helmet — somebody that hits someone so hard they break a helmet, I use it as a trophy,” Harbaugh told Brad Galli.

“(He gave it to me) after the Maryland game. I kind of asked for it,” Harbaugh admitted with a laugh.

Knowing how much Jim Harbaugh loves hard-hitting football and Michigan football, this gift from Michael Barrett was perfect for the Wolverines’ head coach. That said, an even better gift for Harbaugh would be a Big Ten title this weekend and a national title come January.
