Michigan football transfer portal loss AJ Henning finds a new home in the Big Ten

Michigan football transfer portal loss AJ Henning, who stood out as a two-time All-Big Ten special teams contributor during his few seasons in the Maize and Blue, committed to a new school today. The former Wolverine will be staying inside the Big Ten, as he committed to the Northwestern Wildcats this afternoon. Considering AJ Henning is a native of Frankfort, IL, this will be a homecoming trip for him to finish off his college career.

As a recruit in the class of 2020, Henning was a notable four-star wideout prospect, ranked as the No. 137 recruit in the class, the No. 23 wideout in his class, and the No. 3 recruit in the state of Illinois. During his three years in the winged helmet, Henning became a fan favorite as he dazzled with his special teams abilities (as a return man) and showcased speed in several offensive packages. One of his most famous plays as a Michigan football player is an end-around touchdown run against Ohio State during the Wolverines’ 42-27 victory over the Buckeyes in 2021.

Henning appeared in 33 games as a Wolverine, earning All-Big Ten honors twice, Academic All-Big Ten honors twice, and was named the team’s Special Teams Player of the Year in 2022. Now, Henning won’t be heading too far from Ann Arbor for his next step: Northwestern University.
