Dan Villari, a former Wolverine QB who saw action with the Maize and Blue from 2020-2021, is currently balling out as a multi-purpose offensive player for the Syracuse Orange in the ACC. Yesterday, the Michigan football transfer quarterback/tight end saw some reps under center during his new team’s loss against Georgia Tech, setting/tying a program record for completion percentage in a single game (min. 10 passing attempts).
Michigan football transfer quarterback Dan Villari sets record against Georgia Tech
If you want to know how good the Wolverines’ quarterback room was in 2021, here is a hint: all four are currently Power 5 starters and doing well. Dan Villari is a quarterback/tight end at Syracuse, Alex Bowman is the starter for Oklahoma State and has the Cowboys in contention for the Big 12 title game (T-2nd place), Cade McNamara is currently hurt but was the starter for Iowa, who is the Big Ten West Champs right now, and JJ McCarthy is still starting for Michigan football.
On Saturday, against Georgia Tech, Dan Villari was moved from tight end to quarterback for Syracuse. While playing QB is something Villari has done much less of since leaving Ann Arbor, the Orange got some solid reps out of him — the ex-Wolveirne went 14/14 for 59 yards, tying/breaking a team record for completion percentage in a single game.
Now, I say tying/breaking because there is some uncertainty surrounding what the record actually is. Per the Syracuse football media guide, Dan Villari is now the new record holder; however, ESPN has an Orange quarterback going 17/17 a few years back, so who knows?
Either way, it’s good to see former Michigan football players — especially quarterbacks like Villari, Bowman, McNamara, and more — thriving at their new schools. It’s worth noting that 2020 Michigan QB Joe Milton is also a Power 5 starter for the SEC’s Tennessee Volunteers right now.
