The Wolverines are trending toward a massive season. After finishing just shy of the national title game in 2022-23, it’s clear that the Maize and Blue are inching closer and closer to the ultimate goal in college football: a national title. Ahead of the 2023 season opener, Jim Harbaugh worked some magic in the transfer portal, adding a plethora of new stars, further boosting the Wolverines’ odds. Prior to the season, AJ Barner, a new transfer signee for Michigan football and a tight end from Indiana, is emphatic about Michigan’s offensive scheme.
New Michigan football transfer signee excited about the Wolverines’ offensive scheme
Since arriving in Ann Arbor ahead of the 2015 season, Jim Harbaugh has emphasized the use of tight ends in his offense. Over the years, Michigan football has witnessed a multitude of impressive tight ends, such as Jake Butt and others, who have contributed to great success on the field.
With Colston Loveland and AJ Barner on the sidelines in 2023, the Wolverines appear poised to have another fantastic year of tight end play. According to new Michigan football transfer signee AJ Barner, this offensive setup is a significant reason why he chose to come to Ann Arbor in the first place.
“The style of play,” AJ Barner said of the Michigan football offense, per MLive. “Running the ball, being physical up front, the opportunity to be a tight end here and the way they use their tight ends … You walk around here, we’re getting close to 1,000 wins … football means a whole bunch to this place, and it’s something that I care a lot about.”
With some questions surrounding the depth at wide receiver, Michigan football and their second-year starting quarterback, JJ McCarthy, may end up relying on their tight ends more frequently. Moreover, due to the Wolverines’ run-heavy scheme, AJ Barner is expected to receive ample opportunities for run-blocking reps.
Given his substantial stature and extensive Big Ten experience, Barner is well-positioned to excel with the Wolverines in 2022.
As AJ Barner approaches his inaugural season with the Wolverines, it is evident that Jim Harbaugh and the Michigan football offense have ambitious plans for their tight ends and the new additions acquired through the transfer portal.
