We are now officially at halftime of Michigan football vs. UNLV Rebels at the Big House in Ann Arbor, MI. Our halftime score is: Michigan 21, UNLV 0. Here are three thoughts on the Wolverines’ performance at halftime.

3 thoughts on Michigan football vs. UNLV Rebels at halftime

1 — JJ McCarthy looks elite, there are no two ways about it

JJ McCarthy looks incredible, which is a continuation of what we got to see from the junior quarterback last weekend. After setting a record for completion percentage in a game (min. 30 pass attempts), McCarthy has been slicing up the UNLV defense so far in today’s game. At halftime, JJ is 17/18 for 188 yards and one touchdown. Keep feeding McCarthy, and good things will happen. On his first drive today, McCarthy went 5 for 5 for 64 yards before Blake Corum punched in the first touchdown of the game — it was a hot start, which he looks to be building on right now.

In addition to his nearly 190 passing yards, JJ McCarthy has three carries for 38 rushing yards so far today.

2 — Blake Corum is getting back in rhythm

Last weekend was the first time that Blake Corum hit the field for the Wolverines and saw meaningful reps since his Week 12 injury against Illinois last November. While he put up over 70 yards and a touchdown, it was nowhere near what fans are used to seeing from the 2022 Heisman Trophy contender.

So far, during Michigan football vs. UNLV Rebels, the Wolverines’ senior running back has 46 yards and two touchdowns — an impressive start to Week 2 for Blake Corum.

3 — The defense is getting pressure, which is new

Last weekend, Michigan football didn’t get anything out of its pass rush — the Wolverines were without a sack against East Carolina. Today, Michigan finally recorded a sack and more; at the moment, the Wolverines have three sacks and seven tackles for loss. This notable increase in production from the defensive line is a huge step in the right direction for the Michigan defense as Big Ten play looms just a few weeks away.
