If Michigan football fans are wondering who might be the No. 2 cornerback opposite Will Johnson, second-year man Jyaire Hill is a name to know.

Hill, a 6-foot-2 cornerback from Illinois, was a top-200 recruit coming out of high school. He only played in seven games for Michigan football as a freshman, but after a year to transition to the college game, the rising sophomore seems poised for a huge season.

Despite landing four defensive backs from the transfer portal this spring, Hill is my projected starter for U-M this fall. DJ Waller woud have been in the mix too and there were plenty of rumblings about opposing teams trying to steal away Hill from the Wolverines too.

However, Michigan was able to keep him and Sherrone Moore was signing his praises on a recent episode of “In the Trenches” a podcast put out by the University of Michigan on the football program.

“This kid, he’s got length, he’s got speed, he’s got athleticism, he’s fearless, he’ll tackle. He’ll go make a play on the ball. He’s everything you want in a corner,” Moore said.

Moore also talked up star cornerback Will Johnson on the same episode. Hill needs to take the second-year leap but he’s got all the tools to do so, just as Moore said.

It will be nice to have Aamir Hall and Ricky Johnson to push him. Hall was an FCS All-American last season, while Johnson was committed to Washington State before he changed his mind and signed with Michigan.

That gives Michigan some quality depth options. Yet, if Hill plays the way Sherrone Moore and others probably expect him to, the starting job won’t be going to a transfer.
