Heading into Week 3 of the season — which pits the 2nd-ranked Wolverines against the Bowling Green State Falcons — Michigan football freshman defensive lineman Cam Brandt is generating some new hype. The Michigan D-line had a stellar performance last weekend after a silent start in Week 1, and this weekend, it appears as if it will continue to do more of the same. Here is the latest buzz coming out of Schembechler Hall regarding this rising freshman star.

New hype for Michigan football freshman

Cam Brandt was a late addition to Jim Harbaugh’s 2023 recruiting class — he was initially committed to Stanford, yet the Wolverines managed to flip him late in the cycle. The Michigan football freshman defender was a four-star defensive line recruit (247 Sports), ranking as the No. 41 defensive lineman in the 2023 cycle and as the No. 25 player in the state of California. Now, as a freshman with the Wolverines, he is listed as a massive 6-foot-4, 277-pound lineman, and has been nothing short of impressive thus far.

For the time being, there is a good chance that Cam Brandt is going to have to wait his turn in the rotation due to the Wolverines’ impressive defensive line depth; however, that may not stop him from getting some solid early-season reps against teams like Bowling Green.

“Starting from the outside, Cam Brandt has been a great, great addition,” Michigan football defensive line coach Mike Elston said on Wednesday. “He can do a lot of different things. He’s played from the stand-up two-point, and three-point in our base defense and given us really good depth in there. He’s got some really good snaps over the last couple of games. … (Brandt is) doing well on special teams.”

Cam Brandt and the defensive line are standing out

Brandt has the frame, he has the talent, and now, the challenge is getting him the experience. As I have mentioned, the depth of Michigan’s defensive line is fantastic, so this may not be Brandt’s breakout year. That said, keep an eye on the rising Michigan football freshman star, as there is a chance that he becomes a name that all fans are well aware of down the line.

This weekend, Cam Brandt and Michigan football hit the field once again for their final “preseason” game of the 2023 season. Keep an eye on him and other freshmen, who are all gunning for early non-conference reps before Rutgers comes to town next weekend.
