We are only a few months away from the 2023 Michigan football season, which carries immensely high expectations for Jim Harbaugh and the Maize and Blue. A year ago, Michigan won its second straight Big Ten title and made its second consecutive appearance in the College Football Playoff’s four-team format. Currently, the Wolverines are being touted as a national championship contender. If Michigan wants to elevate its game, second-year starting quarterback JJ McCarthy, a former five-star recruit, needs to lead the way.

Jim Harbaugh claims Michigan football quarterback JJ McCarthy is special

So far, apart from the latter half of McCarthy’s 2022 season, Michigan football has witnessed underwhelming quarterback play throughout Jim Harbaugh’s eight-year tenure. However, JJ McCarthy shone brightly in victories against Ohio State, Purdue (BBTG), and despite two errant throws, his performance against TCU was fantastic as well.

Fans and coaches recognize McCarthy’s potential for greatness, and the nation expects the Maize and Blue star to be a Heisman Trophy contender and more this coming fall.

This week, Michigan football head coach Jim Harbaugh met with the media, and he had boundless praise for the rising junior.

“He had a tremendous spring,” Jim Harbaugh said about JJ McCarthy. ” I think that everything that he does… he truly epitomizes ‘better today than yesterday. Better tomorrow than today’ as anybody I’ve ever been around.”

Talent, potential, and drive

JJ McCarthy is renowned as a team player, both on and off the field. In fact, Harbaugh asserts that the rising junior for Michigan football possesses the ‘secret sauce’ that all great quarterbacks require.

“There’s a willingness there to do [anything]. And that’s the secret sauce in a quarterback. You could have all the different attributes which Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen do, and so does J.J. But they also have that willingness to do anything for their teammates. Because of that, their teammates and their coaches, like me, would follow him anywhere. And I would recommend that anyone on the team follow J.J. anywhere that he’s leading.”
