For the past month, Michigan football has been looking to hire a new assistant director of recruiting after Shemy Schembechler announced his resignation. The search is finally complete, as just yesterday, Michigan hired Sam Popper to fill the position.
Sam Popper returns to Michigan football as assistant director of recruiting
This new job won’t be Popper’s first time working with Michigan football. Popper originally got his start working for the Wolverines before departing for Oregon in 2019. At Oregon, Popper worked as the assistant director of recruiting before being promoted to director of recruiting strategy in 2021.
Since then, he has worked for Akron and Memphis football recruiting. With Akron, Popper worked not only as a recruiting coordinator but also as the director of player personnel. He most recently worked as the director of recruiting operations at Memphis.
After four years of bouncing around, Popper is finally heading back to Ann Arbor. Popper announced his return to Michigan football on his Twitter yesterday.
Popper already has a developed relationship with Jim Harbaugh and is a great fit for the position. Michigan football is gaining a strong piece to add to its already dominant recruiting program.
Michigan football originally offered the position to Shemy Schembechler, the son of long-time Michigan football coach Bo Schembechler. After problematic tweets resurfaced on his Twitter, Schembechler resigned just days after his hiring.
After nearly a month of searching, it appears the Wolverines found the perfect candidate to fill the position.
