The NCAA investigation into the Michigan football program for an alleged illegal sign-stealing scandal has been the top headline in perhaps all of sports this week. With Jim Harbaugh and his Wolverines facing a lot of scrutiny heading into tomorrow’s bye weekend, Missouri Tigers head coach Eli Drinkwitz took a bit of a jab at the Maize and Blue in a recent podcast interview.

SEC coach Eli Drinkwitz does not have the best job in his conference; however, he still has a large enough platform that his recent shot at Michigan football did not go unoticed by the media and fans. While appearing on the GoJo and Golic Show today, he was asked about a potential NCAA rule change that would allow electronic communicators in the helmets in college football — something that many players, coaches, and fans have advocated for as of late.

“Yeah, I think everybody but Michigan probably would want to,” Eli Drinkwitz said, obviously referencing the current NCAA investigation and sign-stealing scandal in Ann Arbor.

A potential NCAA rules change coming?

Following his small jab at the Wolverines, he did some real advocating for new rule changes

“I think the (College Football Playoff) is worth a billion dollars, but we can’t afford to put wireless headsets? It’s mind-blowing to me on some of this stuff,” he said. “… I think the saddest thing about the whole thing is, since I’ve been a head coach in 2019, in head coaches meetings, we’ve asked for communication like the NFL, and for whatever reason, it’s always been pushed back. ‘We (the NCAA) can’t do it, we can’t afford it’ — and we’ve let the game get away.”

A new norm for Michigan football in the media

For Michigan football fans, get ready, because these subtle jabs and constant references to the sign-stealing scandal are likely about to become the new norm — regardless of how everything plays out down the stretch.
