Yesterday Michigan football named six team captains for the coming 2023 season, which will begin for the Wolverines in just eight days. Last year, quarterback Cade McNamara was named a captain; however, this season, despite having six captains, junior QB JJ McCarthy was passed on. Why is that?
Why didn’t Michigan football make JJ McCarthy a captain?
Yesterday, the media had the chance to speak with all six of this year’s Michigan football team captains before the end of fall camp. The Wolverines have three captains on defense and three on offense — Blake Corum, Trevor Keegan, and Zak Zinter are the three on offense.
Junior quarterback JJ McCarthy has been a vocal leader for the Wolverines since his high school days at IMG Academy, yet was not picked as a captain this year. Zak Zinter was asked why on Thursday.
“JJ (McCarthy) wasn’t eligible to be a captain,” Zak Zinter said yesterday. “So, it’s only a seniors, fifth-year, sixth-year guys. So he wasn’t on the ballot this year. But he’s definitely one of the biggest leaders on our team. He knows that, and we know that, and he’s just as much leader as any of us.”
A lot is at stake for the Wolverines during the 2023 season
If McCarthy does want to be a captain in the Maize and Blue — similar to Tom Brady many years ago — he will have to forgo the 2024 NFL Draft and return for his senior year in Ann Arbor next fall, when he will finally be eligible.
Regardless of his official title on the team, JJ McCarthy will be looking to build on his 2022 performance, in which he threw for 2,719 yards and 22 touchdowns. With a lot on the line this year, McCarthy’s performance will likely be a deciding factor for the Maize and Blue.
