There’s ‘buzz’ about Will Johnson playing offense for Michigan football

Could Will Johnson play wide receiver this season for Michigan football? It’s not that far-fetched.

Michigan football star Will Johnson has often been compared to former Wolverines legend Charles Woodson and for good reason.

Woodson wore No. 2 for Michigan football and made the number famous. He won the Heisman Trophy during the 1997 season and led the Wolverines to a co-national championship after a 12-0 season and a Rose Bowl win.

However, Woodson, who became the first mostly defensive player to win the award, did so because he played offense too. He was also a dynamic special teams player and returned a punt for a touchdown against Ohio State. He also had a long reception in that game that set up a touchdown.

Woodson also made some big plays in other games, such as a touchdown reception against Penn State in a matchup of top-5 teams.

Johnson, despite two stellar seasons, hasn’t played offense for Michigan football, but the door isn’t closed. According to Johnson, there’s “buzz” about him playing wide receiver this season.

Could Will Johnson play offense for Michigan football?

“A little bit, for sure. There’s a little buzz around the building, so we’ll see how it goes,” Johnson said. “It’s always a possibility, for sure.”

To be fair, Johnson admitted that he started the buzz. However, he also said Kirk Campbell, the offensive coordinator has been open to it. At least more open to it than Michigan football head coach Sherrone Moore.

“Coach Campbell always says something to me about it. Coach Moore, he’s a little less fond of it, just because he wants to make sure I’m still out there on defense. All the offensive guys love it, and they want me to. They know what I can do, so hopefully I’m able to do it a little bit,” Johnson said.

Michigan football could use some more talent at wide receiver. Johnson did play the position in high school, yet even with all the buzz, I’d be surprised if this actually happened, even if it’s fun to think about.
