Recently, we reported that Michigan football is pursuing a new transfer portal target: Josh Wallace, a former three-star cornerback for the UMass Minutemen. This week, Wallace will visit Ann Arbor before heading to Virginia Tech next week. The Wolverines are reportedly one of the three remaining teams in contention for his commitment, making this visit crucial for both Wallace and Jim Harbaugh. Here’s what you should know about Wallace and his visit.

Michigan football looking to land top remaining transfer portal target

One of the remaining concerns about the 2023 Michigan football roster is its depth, which some people misunderstood in my previous breakdown of the Wolverines’ defensive backfield. The top players in Michigan’s DB room, including Rod Moore, Will Johnson, and others, are incredibly impressive and reasons for excitement. In fact, it’s one of the best defensive backfields that the Wolverines have seen in a while.

However, there is still a need for depth, especially with Amorion Walker still developing and no standout players emerging yet. Josh Wallace could provide exactly that — he is a veteran standout defensive back with plenty of experience and matching talent.

During Wallace’s time at UMass, he had an impressive resume. He served as a team captain and was selected to the All-Independent team, among other achievements. After another standout season last year, Wallace decided it was time to move on from the lower ranks of college football. From the look of things, Wallace has seemingly narrowed down his transfer portal destinations to three schools: Michigan, Oklahoma, and Virginia Tech. Of these programs, only the Wolverines (13-1, Big Ten Champions) had a winning season last fall.

In the exciting 2022 season, Wallace played in all 12 games and showcased his defensive skills. He recorded 41 tackles, including three tackles for loss, displaying his versatility and impact in every play. Additionally, he made notable contributions with one fumble recovery, two interceptions, and eight pass breakups. His ability to read the game and prevent the opposing team from scoring was exceptional.

A future difference-maker in the Maize and Blue?

Wallace’s consistent performance, leadership qualities, and game-changing abilities make him a valuable player for whoever gets him next. His addition via the transfer portal could greatly benefit Jim Harbaugh and the Michigan football team this fall, which is why he is currently a top target in the coaching staff ahead of official visits, which will start this weekend. Wallace is currently on his way to campus and will be in Ann Arbor until Friday, indicating that the coaching staff is actively working towards securing his commitment.
