Earlier this week Michigan football landed the No. 1 running back in the transfer portal in Justice Haynes. The sophomore played two seasons at Alabama and accumulated 616 yards and nine touchdowns on the ground. Out of the backfield he added 17 catches for 99 yards. In 2024 he led all Crimson Tide running backs with 5.7 yards per carry.

What can transfer RB Justice Haynes do for Michigan?

Almost anything.

Haynes likely would’ve put up much higher numbers if it wasn’t for quarterback Jalen Milroe leading the Crimson Tide in rushing. At 5-foot-11 and 210 pounds, Haynes brings the type of skill set equivalent to a five-tool player in baseball. He runs with acceleration, speed, power, vision and a low pad level.

Haynes could be the most explosive player on Michigan’s offense next season. He has SEC experience and will likely be itching to show what he can do as a lead back. Jordan Marshall and Benjamin Hall could have roles in the backfield as well, but Haynes seems to be of a different caliber.

A strong running game makes the jobs of the defense and special teams easier. Additionally, if freshman phenom Bryce Underwood wins the starting job at quarterback, running the football could help him get comfortable quicker. No matter who is throwing the rock, Haynes will make their job less complicated.
