LOS ANGELES — This season, Jim Harbaugh and his Wolverines found a breakout true freshman in wide receiver Semaj Morgan. Morgan, who can seemingly do it all — from jet sweeps to catching the ball to punt returns and more — may be younger than many of the team’s other stars, though the Michigan football freshman has the attention of Alabama heading into Monday’s College Football Playoff semi-final matchup at the Rose Bowl.

Michigan wide receiver Semaj Morgan (12) practices before the UNLV game at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor on Saturday, Sept. 9, 2023.

Michigan football needed some of its 2023 freshmen to step up in a big way, and Semaj Morgan did just that at a key position: wide receiver, which was a room that many were concerned about heading into the Wolverines’ current campaign.

On Friday, I had a chance to speak with Bama defensive back Malachi Moore, a team captain and senior standout for the Crimson Tide, who had some high praise for Michigan’s rising star.

“I’ve been watching Semaj (Morgan) and he’s a very good, very explosive player,” Moore told me. “He wasn’t getting that many looks early in the season, but as the season went on, he was getting a little more (targets).”

Semaj Morgan likely going to get some action against Bama in the Rose Bowl

While Morgan is not quite WR1 for Michigan football just yet, he’s a threat in all aspects when on the field for the Maize and Blue. So far, during his first year of college ball, the freshman wideout has recorded 183 yards and two touchdowns through the air on a mere 17 catches — he also has another three touches on the ground, rushing for over 60 yards and two more touchdowns, as well as an 87-yard punt return from the Big Ten title game.

On Monday, expect this Michigan football freshman star to get a few solid looks as the Wolverines look to down Alabama in the Rose Bowl, advancing to the national title game for the first time in program history.
