In order to be a Michigan football legend, there is one key step that all Wolverines must accomplish: beating Ohio State. So far, since the turn of the decade, the Wolverines have done nothing but that, downing the Buckeyes in 2021, 2022, and over the weekend, making it three in a row with a 30-24 win at the Big House. On Monday, ahead of the Big Ten title game, now un-suspended head coach Jim Harbaugh pointed out a new U-M legend: Sherrone Moore, who is 4-0 as the Wolverines’ acting head coach this fall.

Jim Harbaugh identifies new Michigan football legend

Heading into the 2023 Michigan football season, there were only two games that everyone knew would define the Wolverines’ season: at Penn State and against Ohio State. Well, by the time November rolled around, and the Maize and Blue had to face the Nittany Lions and Buckeyes, Jim Harbaugh had been suspended from the sideline by the Big Ten Conference.

In Harbaugh’s place as acting head coach was Sherrone Moore, who is now 4-0 as Michigan’s head coach heading into the Big Ten title game, where he will re-assume his position as the team’s offensive line coach and offensive coordinator.

Sherrone Moore picks up win over Ohio State, Penn State

Sherrone Moore has head coaching wins over a top 10 Penn State team (24-15) and a top 2 Ohio State team (30-24) — more top 10 and top 5 wins than Nick Saban and many others have this fall. Because of this, as well as his dedication to the program and more, Jim Harbaugh dubbed Sherrone Moore to be a Michigan football legend on Monday ahead of the Big Ten title game.

“The coaches, the staff — especially Coach Sherrone Moore — called a great game (against Ohio State),” Jim Harbaugh said on Monday. “(He) coached the offensive line and made the decisions as the head coach. And I am not saying that I am in a position of granting who is a ‘Michigan Man’ or who isn’t, or who a Michigan legend is or is not.

“I am not the maker of those lists, but I have nominated people before, and I nominate Sherrone Moore as a Michigan legend,” Harbaugh said.

Could Moore be Michigan’s next head coach?

Jim Harbaugh is entirely correct about Sherrone Moore becoming a Michigan football legend with his win over Ohio State. Not only was Moore a massive part of the Wolveirnes’ turnaround back in 2021, but he was the team’s offensive play-caller throughout the 2022 and 2023 seasons and even picked up a few huge top-10 wins as a head coach.

Sherrone Moore is as beloved and noted as just about anyone in Ann Arbor right now, and with Jim Harbaugh-NFL rumors continuing to fly, it seems that Michigan football may already be lining things up for Moore to potentially take over as head coach someday.

We’ll have to wait and see how things play out on that front, but for now, it’s clear that Sherrone Moore has become a Michigan football legend and could further cement that status with a win in the Big Ten title game this weekend.
