This afternoon, I heard from second-year Wolverine defensive coordinator Jesse Minter, who is in the middle of preparation for the coming Rose Bowl game against Alabama on January 1. According to Minter, Michigan football star defender Will Johnson, an All-American cornerback, is still getting back to 100 percent after an injury in November, though he expects big things from the sophomore cornerback.

Jesse Minter updates injury status of Michigan football star defender Will Johnson ahead of Rose Bowl game

Will Johnson is a massive part of Michigan’s elite defense, which ranks No. 1 nationally heading into this season’s Rose Bowl (CFP) game against Alabama, which sits just a few weeks away. While Jesse Minter would not get into specifics about Johnson — who missed nearly half of the Ohio State game and the entire Big Ten Championship game — he gave some insight as to what he sees from Johnson during bowl prep right now.

“I’m not going to speak for Will (Johnson), but I think he is practicing really well. I think the extra little bit of time — you know, he really had about two and a half weeks of non-football stuff after the Ohio State game.

“… I think he is as close and as ready as he can be. I’m super excited to see him go out there and cover those guys (Alabama). Him being at his best obviously makes us a better defense, so I expect Will to go out there and have a great game.”

Of course, seeing as Alabama has some elite receivers and a fantastic quarterback, Michigan football needs Will Johnson to come back from injury by January 1. While Jesse Minter would not delve into Johnson’s status too much on Tuesday, it sounds like things are trending in the right direction for the sophomore superstar.
