Michigan football fans are eagerly awaiting the start of the 2023 season, and with it, a new Wolverine offense. All offseason, Michigan football coaches have stated that this year’s offense will be more pass-heavy. Recently, Michigan football wide receiver coach Ron Bellamy spoke about how the Wolverine passing attack is looking ahead of the week one opener against ECU.

Last year, Michigan football quarterback J.J. McCarthy entered the season in a position battle with quarterback Cade McNamara. After winning the starting job, McCarthy continued to improve. Last season, in a run-heavy offense, McCarthy threw for 22 touchdowns and 2,719 passing yards.

With the coaching staff in support of passing the ball more, McCarthy could have his most elite season yet. Michigan football wide receiver coach Ron Bellamy recently stated that the passing attack has, “looked good.” He added, “It’s looked good in practice. It’s just a matter of getting out there Saturday and executing. But everything has looked good. J.J. has been awesome. He’s had a fantastic camp.”

Bellamy spoke further about McCarthy’s ability, saying, “He’s a year older, a year wiser. I said it when I had an interview with Jon Jansen that I thought J.J. (McCarthy) was the best quarterback in college football. I’m saying it because I’ve watched him. I totally believe in him, and he gets the passing game rolling.

“Obviously, as coaches you want to put guys in the best situations, but there’s no doubt in my mind that J.J. is one of the best leaders I’ve been around. As far as being a playmaker, he’s showcased that day in and day out.”

Bellamy also spoke about how the receiver core has developed this offseason. “The receivers — we’ve stepped our game up. Saturday, I’m hopeful that when we get an opportunity, everyone in the passing game, we start off with a bang.”

He further added, “The receivers have done a good job this camp, so it’s just a matter of putting it all together on Saturday.” The Wolverine offense will get an opportunity to showcase its new passing attack this Saturday against the East Carolina Pirates at noon Eastern time.
