This fall, Michigan football will be aiming for a third-straight Big Ten title and a College Football Playoff (CFP) appearance. Over the past two seasons, Jim Harbaugh and his Wolverines have an impressive 25-3 overall record, including perfect records against Ohio State and Penn State. Former SEC coach Dan Mullen believes that the Maize and Blue are bound for the CFP for the third consecutive season and predicts that Michigan will ultimately clinch the national title.

Dan Mullen, a former SEC coach who worked with the Florida Gators and Mississippi State Bulldogs, recently released his College Football Playoff projections for the 2023-24 season. It’s worth noting that Mullen is now an analyst with ESPN.

According to Mullen, Michigan football, which has been part of the last two CFP fields of four but fell short on both occasions, is poised to secure a spot in the playoff for the third consecutive year. This achievement would set a Big Ten record, as not even Ohio State has made the College Football Playoff three times in a row. Nonetheless, the Wolverines will also be striving to avoid making history in a negative light, seeking to prevent becoming the only Big Ten team to lose three straight in the CFP.

Mullen thinks the Wolverines will win the 2023-24 national title

In addition to Michigan football, Dan Mullen predicts that the Georgia Bulldogs, Texas Longhorns, and USC Trojans will earn spots in the playoff, all being Power 5 conference champions. Mullen’s projections have Michigan facing Texas in the semi-finals. He anticipates that USC will overcome Georgia but fall short in the title game, ultimately resulting in the Wolverines being crowned national champions for the first time since 1997.

For those curious, Dan Mullen ranks Michigan football as the No. 2 team in the nation in his 2023 preseason poll. This lines up with both the coaches and AP polls, both of which also place Michigan as the nation’s 2nd-ranked team heading into the year.
