The Jim Harbaugh era in Ann Arbor has treated the Wolverines well; through nine seasons, the Maize and Blue are 89-25, including a 40-3 record over the past three years, with three Big Ten titles, three CFP appearances, a National Championship, and more. After a perfect 15-0 season in 2023-24, the 9th-year Michigan football coach made his NFL plans official and has accepted the head coaching job with the LA Chargers.

Few coaches in Michigan’s history, if any, leave Michigan football with the resume that Jim Harbaugh has. The year before Harbaugh got to Ann Arbor, MI, Michigan was 5-7 and appeared to have absolutely no hope of ever recovering; however, just one year into Harbaugh’s tenure, the Wolverines were back to winning 10 games and being ranked in the top 15 annually.

Sure, the rebuild took longer than expected; however, Michigan football eventually climbed the ladder and got back to the top of the sport for the first time since 1997; in fact, the Wolverines had never won a Big Ten title game, made the CFP, or appeared in a national title game. Over the past three years, they checked all of these boxes.

From heart-breaking losses to Ohio State and Michigan State to thrilling Rose Bowl wins, Big Ten Championships, and even a National Championship season last fall, Jim Harbaugh stood tall alongside his Wolverines. He was involved in his community off the field and epitomizes what so many of us know as a “Michigan Man,” even in the hard times, like the pandemic season in 2020.

As many Michigan football stars from last season’s team have pointed out, “business is finished.” Jim Harbaugh did what he came home to do: put Michigan above Ohio State, win Big Ten titles, and claim an outright National Championship — something that not even Bo Schembechler or Lloyd Carr did during their time with the program.

It’s been a heck of a run for Michigan football under Jim Harbaugh, and while the program is still in fantastic hands with Sherrone Moore likely getting the call to be Michigan’s next head coach, it’s devastating to say goodbye to one of the greatest coaches that the city of Ann Arbor has ever seen.

Harbaugh’s NFL future is sealed now: he will be the head coach of the LA Chargers.
