Michigan football QB commitment Carter Smith dominates, looks like a perfect fit

Michigan football quarterback Carter Smith is looking better and better as a prospect. He also feels like a perfect fit for the Wolverines.

Recently, I wrote about how Michigan football recruiting is in a much better place than the narrative surrounding it suggests.

Yes, there is work to do in the 2025 class. It’s also not even June. Michigan football has an impressive list of visitors coming to campus in the next month and it feels like there will be some real momentum soon.

However, the Wolverines already have one of their most important commitments in the 2025 class — quarterback Carter Smith.

It’s never ideal to go into the summer without a quarterback commit and Michigan football won’t have to worry about that. Smith isn’t five-star quarterback Bryce Underwood, who is ranked No. 1 overall in the 2025 class.

But Smith has jumped up the rankings since his commitment and is No. 151 overall according to the 247 Sports composite rankings. He’s also ranked 13th among quarterbacks and was the Gatorade Player of the Year in Florida.

Smith didn’t get an Elite 11 invite, despite a really strong performance, but he tells EJ Holland of The Wolverine he wouldn’t have gone anyway. He’s more focused on his own development and has been working with Brock Purdy’s QB guru.

Smith’s dual-threat ability is elite

One of the things I love about Smith is his dual-threat ability. J.J. McCarthy was a pro-style quarterback. He could run if needed and Alex Orji is a dangerous running threat too.

Jadyn Davis doesn’t offer that element. He’s an elite passer though and watching Smith dominate on Friday night in a spring jamboree, scoring seven rushing touchdowns in two games — should make you feel good about the future of the QB room.

In one game, Smith carried the ball seven times for 100 yards and three touchdowns. He’s not just a runner through. His passing ability has improved and he’s drawn comparisons to Avery Johnson of Kansas State who is the reason Will Howard isn’t the starting quarterback there anymore (now at Ohio State).

So even though Michigan isn’t landing a bunch of five-star prospects, there’s big-time talent coming, especially at the quarterback position.
