The Wolverines are now eight games into the 2023 season, and so far, have won every game by no less than 24 points. Last weekend, against Michigan State, Michigan football quarterback JJ McCarthy had himself yet another impressive performance, completing 78% of his throws for nearly 290 yards, three touchdowns, and no picks — for the eighth game in a row, he did not see a single snap in the fourth quarter. This week, McCarthy is No. 1 in the Heisman Trophy odds; however, today, he explained that he could care less about that.
Michigan football quarterback doesn’t care about the Heisman Trophy
JJ McCarthy is the Heisman Trophy frontrunner right now, though he doesn’t seem to care about that one bit. On the other hand, his season goals remain the same: help Michigan football win its first national championship since the 1997 season.
“It’s a tremendous honor,” the junior Michigan football quarterback said this afternoon. “But at the end of the day, I could care less about that (the Heisman Trophy). I don’t really care about trophies, I care about championships. That’s the same thing that this entire team cares about. So, it’s a tremendous honor, but we’re going to still focus on our goals and getting better every day.”
McCarthy talks Aidan Hutchinson, Blake Corum, and the Heisman race
During his time with Michigan football thus far, JJ McCarthy has gotten to witness two straight potential Heisman Trophy winners: Aidan Hutchinson (edge rusher, 2021) and Blake Corum (running back, 2022). He had a chance to talk about watching them and how it has impacted his journey this year.
“It was exactly that — just observing both of them, and they were just so focused on getting better every day,” JJ McCarthy explained on Monday. “You wouldn’t even know that they (Hutchinson and Corum) were up for the Heisman. Nothing changed in their daily routine, nothing changed in their work ethic and their motivation going into every day, so I’m just going to do the same.”
Michigan football set for Week 10 return against Purdue
The 2023 season is far from over for Michigan football and its elite quarterback, JJ McCarthy, and both he and his team know it. This week, Michigan gets a well-deserved bye; however, the following weekends will be crucial for the Maize and Blue.
Purdue comes to town next weekend, followed by road trips to No. 10 Penn State and Maryland. Finally, per usual, Michigan football will host No. 3 Ohio State at the Big House in a game that will likely determine the winner of the Big Ten — and potentially the national title — this season.
