Since arriving in Ann Arbor ahead of his freshman season in 2021, Michigan football quarterback JJ McCarthy has been a massive part of the Wolverines’ turnaround, going from 2-4 in 2020 to winning potentially three straight Big Ten titles and more. With this weekend’s conference championship matchup against No. 16 Iowa fast approaching and a lot of question marks in the College Football Playoff landscape right now, McCarthy’s statements from earlier this season have us confident that the Maize and Blue will be ready for whatever CFP matchup they are handed.
Michigan football quarterback had simple message ahead of the season
Yesterday, I outlined the two most likely College Football Playoff matchups that the Wolverines will play in, assuming Michigan football beats Iowa and wins the Big Ten this weekend. Assuming Georgia avoids (another) upset against Alabama in the SEC title game, U-M will likely be facing either 4th-ranked Florida State or the PAC-12 Champion in the Rose Bowl game, though that remains to be seen.
Earlier this year, ahead of Week 1, quarterback JJ McCarthy made his team’s stance on its opponents quite clear: Michigan football will be ready to play anyone, any time, any place. While he was talking about the Wolverines’ non-conference and Big Ten opponents at the time, his message to the country still holds true as the post-season approaches.
“It doesn’t matter who we’re playing,” JJ McCarthy said during fall camp. “It could be out in a parking lot right there, it could be at Yost (Ice Arena), we are gonna bring it our all. (Michigan football) takes it day by day, game by game, it doesn’t matter who we’re playing, we’re gonna give it our all.”
With the Big Ten title game and CFP approaching McCarthy’s message still holds true
A few weeks later, JJ McCarthy doubled down on his “any time, any place” message during Week 5 of the season. Michigan’s CFP matchup still remains to be seen, and it could be a number of teams — even Texas and Alabama are in the conversation right now. Regardless, Michigan football will be ready — it’ll be ready for the Rose Bowl, the Sugar Bowl, for Georgia, for Oregon, and even for Ohio State.
It doesn’t matter who and where Michigan football will play — the Wolverines are locked in on a national title and will be 100% prepared for any team that is slated on their schedule this fall.
