With new college football still two months away, what better to do than watch some old games? Recently, ESPN put out a list ranking the top 10 college football teams from recent decades. On this list, Michigan football ranked No. 4 among teams in the 2020’s decade.

Michigan football ranked as the fourth-best team since 2020

After an abysmal 2-4 finish to the 2020 covid season, the Wolverines drastically turned things around. In both 2021 and 2022, Michigan football won the Big Ten championship and secured a spot in the College Football Playoff. In both seasons they entered the playoff as the No. 2 seed.

Here is the complete list of the top 10 football teams in the 2020’s decade according to ESPN.

  1. Alabama
  2. Ohio State
  3. Georgia
  4. Michigan
  5. Clemson
  6. Oklahoma
  7. Notre Dame
  8. Iowa
  9. Utah
  10. Cincinnati

While Michigan football made it to the playoffs twice, the Wolverines never made it to the national championship. Three of the four teams that have played in the national championship since 2020 were ranked above Michigan, with TCU being the only exception.

Future outlook of the 2020s

Michigan football is currently in an even better position than in 2021 and 2022. The upcoming season could be the year for the Wolverines to finally get over the hump of the semifinals and play in their first national championship since the foundation of the College Football Playoff.

For Jim Harbaugh, the grass is still green beyond 2023. Harbaugh has assembled the No. 2 nationally ranked 2024 recruiting class. After the Wolverines’ success in recent years, Harbaugh has been able to pull in blue-chip recruits more easily, putting the future of Michigan football in a good position.
