Following the Wolverines’ incredible 13-1 season in 2022, former wide receiver Andrel Anthony — who stood out as a freshman but had a quiet sophomore season — decided to find a new home via the transfer portal. Now, after committing to the Oklahoma Sooners, this Michigan football transfer loss is already impressing his new team.

The Maize and Blue are not known for having a strong passing attack — Jim Harbaugh’s offense is based on the ground game, and it has worked well for the Wolverines thus far. That said, during Michigan’s 4-point loss against Michigan State back in 2021, Andrel Anthony emerged as a breakout freshman, impressing the entire state with an incredible performance.

Despite this, Anthony had not done a whole lot since and decided to hit the transfer portal following the Wolverines’ 2022 campaign. Now, just a few months into his tenure with the Oklahoma Sooners, Anthony has already been impressive with his new squad.

“(Andrel Anthony) is a burner,” said OU receiver Gavin Freeman. “He’s insanely fast.”

“There ain’t no one I feel can stay in front of him and I’ve been playing football for a long time,” said fellow OU wideout Jayden Gibson. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone get off the ball as fast as him. … We all see his talent for sure.”

A breakout year in the Big 12 for this former Wolverine?

While Anthony was not always the most impactful player for Michigan football, there is a chance that it had something to do with the Wolverines’ run-heavy offense. At Oklahoma, a school that loves to air out the football, there is a good chance that he will continue to develop and thrive for the Sooners as they look to get things back on track.

“It’s a brand-new start,” Andrel Anthony said of his new team. “(They said) ‘we know you have a lot of potential and a lot of untapped skills, and we want to unlock that for you.’”

He may no longer be a Wolverine, but Andrel Anthony is definitely still a name that many Michigan football fans will be keeping an eye on as the season progresses.
