This year, the Michigan Wolverines football program is expected to be one of the nation’s top contenders for the national title. Over the past two seasons, the Maize and Blue have achieved back-to-back Big Ten championships, making appearances in the College Football Playoff both times, with an impressive 13-1 overall finish last fall. Greg McElroy’s new preseason poll confirms Michigan’s position among the leading title contenders heading into the 2023 season.

In McElroy’s recent preseason top 25 poll, the Michigan Wolverines football team is ranked among the top 3 teams in the nation. They hold the No. 2 spot, trailing only the reigning national champions, the Georgia Bulldogs.

Notably, Michigan football (2) is ranked ahead of other top-caliber programs such as Alabama (3), Ohio State (4), and LSU (5). Other Big Ten programs making the list include Penn State (11) and Wisconsin (14).

Once again, Michigan’s status as a major title contender this year is attributed to the return of rising junior quarterback JJ McCarthy, who appears poised for a breakout season. The Wolverines are well-positioned across the board, with abundant talent and experience on both sides of the football.

As Jim Harbaugh enters his 9th season as head coach in Ann Arbor, the Wolverines seem to have their best chance at securing a title and a clear path to the College Football Playoff. Now, the Maize and Blue must live up to the hype and strive to fulfill their ambitious goals of bringing a title back to the Wolverine state for the first time since 1997.
