Over the weekend, Michigan football transfer Ernest Hausmann suited up for a game at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln, NE — something he is quite familiar with. Still, this time was different for the true sophomore linebacker seeing as he was wearing Maize and Blue and playing against his former team, the Nebraska Cornhuskers. On Tuesday, Hausmann explained the emotion behind his return home.

Michigan football transfer reacts to playing former team

Ernest Hausmann was good enough to start at Nebraska back in 2022, even playing lights out against Michigan football during the Huskers’ late-season loss in Ann Arbor. After the season, he hit the transfer portal and soon joined Jim Harbaugh’s squad. Needless to say, after committing to the Maize and Blue, Hausmann quickly noted the Wolverines’ Week 5 road trip back to his first team: Nebraska.

“I saw the schedule come out, and I knew this was one of those games that you look forward to all year,” the Michigan football transfer said after the Wolverines’ 45-7 victory. “So it’s one of those things that you dream of as a player. Just to know of — my experience, my first year of college football, what that place did for me — it meant a lot.

“I’ve had a lot of great memories there and just developed as a player and as a person. So I’ve met people who have done a lot to support me in my football career. And it’s one of those things that you live for, to go back there in a winged helmet and just do your business.”

Ernest Hausmann reacts to booing from Nebraska Cornhuskers fans

Ernest Hausmann, who was previously a hero for Nebraska Cornhuskers fans, was greeted at Memorial Stadium with boos — which makes sense, seeing as he was playing for the winningest program of all time instead of… Nebraska.

“Yeah, I mean, during the game, we were locked in,” Ernest Hausmann said when asked about the boos. “You would have tunnel vision, so you really don’t hear the outside noise; you just focus on the next play attempt. I knew that was gonna come throughout the week of preparation, and throughout the year, I knew when that arrived, it was gonna come eventually.

“But all you can do is smile as a player. It’s one of those things that for me, I think about it like you almost make it. And now you have people on the other side try to boo you, speak badly, you feel like you’ve done something to earn some respect in that way. But you know, those fans over there, they’ve done a great job supporting me when I was at Nebraska. It’s a bittersweet love, you know; it’s one of those things that comes with the price of playing football.”

All said and done, Hausmann and Michigan football left Linlcon with a massive 45-7 victory — a win that has some analysts and polls ranking the Wolverines at No. 1 heading into this weekend’s game against the Minnesota Golden Gophers.
