The Michigan State football program fired Mel Tucker after reports surfaced of an ongoing investigation into the sexual harassment of Brenda Tracy. Now, the Spartans will need a new head coach for the 2024 season, and as far-fetched as it may seem, new rumors are starting to surface that indicate MSU’s interest in ex-Ohio State coach Urban Meyer. On the other hand, reports from credible sources say there is no interest from Meyer. Here is the latest buzz.

Rumor says that Urban Meyer wants to interview with Michigan State after Mel Tucker firing over Brenda Tracy investigation

Earlier this week, Bernie Fratto of FOX Sports Radio stated to the world that his “best mole” is linking Urban Meyer to the Michigan State football job opening. Meyer, who hasn’t coached since he was let go from the Jacksonville Jaguars amidst yet another scandal, has been rumored by a few others to have an interest in making a return to the Big Ten.

“My best mole tells me Urban Meyer will interview with Michigan State for their HC position,” Fratto said. “Stay tuned. Yes, it’s real. It’s possible. He has a lot of backers, so we’ll see where this goes.”

In response to Fratto’s comments, Brady Quinn of FOX Big Noon Kickoff expressed that he has heard otherwise. In response, Fratto fired back on social media, stating, “Brady — Please be more specific. He’s not there? There’s no interest? I worked in that market for 17 years, and I am connected. Your comment is vague and obtuse. Tell us what you know? Shut it down right now. Be specific if you know. I’m after the truth, NOT clicks. I implicitly trust my moles. If I’m wrong, I’ll eat it.”

Bruce Feldman reports that Meyer has no interest

Shortly after these rumors surfaced, Bruce Feldman — one of the top insiders in college football — reported that Urban Meyer does not have an interest in Michigan State football. Here is what Feldman said.

“About the ‘reports’ linking Urban Meyer to the Michigan State HC job… I just checked with him,” Feldman began. “There is zero truth to it with him being a candidate for it. He has no interest in that, and is happy with what he’s doing now at Fox Sports.”

Meyer has an impressive resume

Thus far, Urban Meyer has coached 17 years of college football across four programs: Bowling Green, Florida, Utah, and Ohio State. He has a few national titles, a number of Big Ten and SEC titles, and more. After the 2018 season, Urban Meyer left Ohio State amidst a scandal, concluding his Big Ten coaching career with an 83-9 overall record.

Since the Mel Tucker-Brenda Tracy news broke, the world of Big Ten football has been flipped on its side — regardless of who the Spartans hire, it feels like an uphill battle lies ahead in East Lansing.
