On Wednesday, 247 Sports released its top 35 college football head coaches heading into the 2023 season this fall. On 247’s esteemed list is a deserving name: Michigan’s Jim Harbaugh, who ranks among the top-3 head coaches in the sport.

247 ranks Jim Harbaugh in top-3 head coaches

Over the past two seasons, Michigan football head coach Jim Harbaugh has won 25 of his 28 games (19-1 Big Ten), beaten Ohio State twice, won two Big Ten titles, and made the College Football Playoff twice. Additionally, his team finished top-3 in both seasons and nearly saw back-to-back Heisman finalists in Aidan Hutchinson (runner-up) and Blake Corum.

Here is what 247 Sports had to say about why they ranked Jim Harbaugh at No. 3

“Another win over Ohio State, the Big Ten championship and a playoff berth for Harbaugh’s Wolverines in 2022,” Brad Crawford wrote. “Outside of Georgia’s Kirby Smart, no coach nationally has made more noise since the start of the 2021 campaign. He was able to dodge NFL murmurs with a new deal last spring, handled quarterback controversy to open the season and sprinted through the Big Ten’s gauntlet unscathed as the league’s top coach. Will Harbaugh and Michigan go for the trifecta in 2023? He needs a playoff win.”

Harbaugh is coming for it all once again in 2023

Just as Crawford said, the only things Jim Harbaugh still needs to accomplish are obtaining a playoff win and perhaps even a national title. In 2023, the Michigan Wolverines’ roster is looking like one of the best in the nation and definitely the best in the Big Ten. Tough tests at Penn State and against Ohio State will define Michigan’s season this fall, though right now, it is looking like 2023 could be one of the best Michigan football teams ever assembled.

With top-3 head coach Jim Harbaugh still at the helm, the sky is the limit for the Wolverines this year.
