Yesterday, we talked about freshman defensive lineman Cam Brandt, a late addition to Jim Harbaugh’s 2023 signing class who is already turning heads in Ann Arbor. In addition to him, D-line coach Mike Elston outlined another pair of Michigan football freshmen who have been stirring up some new buzz heading into Week 3 of the season, which will pit Michigan against Bowling Green. Keep an eye on Enow Etta and Trey Pierce for the Maize and Blue this year.
2 Michigan football freshmen stirring up new buzz
The Michigan football defensive line is known to be elite. Since Jim Harbaugh arrived in 2015, the D-line has been an emphasis of the Wolverines’ defense; over the past few years alone, it has produced some major names, including Aidan Hutchinson, David Ojabo, Mazi Smith, and many more.
Right now, there are a few top Michigan football freshmen that defensive line coach Mike Elston is quite pleased with — we covered Cam Brandt yesterday, but there is another pair of freshmen that continue to impress: Enow Etta and Trey Pierce.
Mike Elston talks Enow Etta and Trey Pierce
Here is what D-line coach Mike Elston said about this duo of Michigan football freshman linemen this week.
“Enow (Etta), he’s done a really nice job,” said Mike Elston. “Cam (Brandt) is a little further along with technique and things he might have been coached in high school, and Enow’s catching up quickly because it’s important to him — He’s very talented.
“Trey Pierce — he’s going to be really, really good,” Mike Elston continued. “We’ve been force-feeding him, trying to get him out there. He’s played in both games — he got a tackle in the last game (against UNLV). He’s really good at block destruction. He needs to work on his pass rush like a lot of incoming freshmen do, but it’s important to him, and he works his tail off.”
This duo of Michigan football freshmen — who don the No. 95 (Pierce) and No. 96 (Etta) jerseys — are both rising stars to keep an eye on. This weekend, Michigan football has its final “tune-up” game (vs. Bowling Green) before Big Ten play starts, so watch out for either (or both) of these freshmen defensive linemen to hit the field on Saturday.
