Over the weekend, the Wolverines crushed the Michigan State Spartans 49-0 en route to an 8-0 start heading into this weekend’s bye. With the win, Michigan football quarterback JJ McCarthy also became the nation’s Heisman Trophy frontrunner, though that was the least of the Michigan-related headlines yesterday morning. With an NCAA investigation into Michigan’s alleged sign-stealing tactics on the horizon, here is how McCarthy and his teammates are handling the news.

How is Michigan football quarterback handling the NCAA investigation?

Yesterday, following the Wolverines’ win over Michigan State in East Lansing, Michigan football stars JJ McCarthy and Braiden McGregor spoke with the media. With the NCAA investigation news gaining steam, McCarthy was asked whether he felt Michigan has a target on its back or not and addressed how the locker room is rolling with the punches right now.

“I don’t really know (if Michigan football has a target on its back),” JJ McCarthy said. “I’m just so focused on what we’re doing in the building, and so is he (Jim Harbaugh), that it never really becomes a distraction.

“We never really think of it (the outside noise),” he continued, “as anything other than, you know, Coach (Jim) Harbaugh has to deal with something new once again. So he does a great job of just keeping us focused on the main thing, which is winning football games.”

Jim Harbaugh thinks that there is a target on Michigan football

You know who does think that there is a target on Michigan football’s back? Head coach Jim Harbaugh, who had this to say about the Wolverines following last weekend’s win over Michigan State.

“Yeah, I think success does that,” Harbaugh said. “There’s people that don’t like to see people be successful. And there’s a target (on Michigan’s back). Everybody’s pointed that out from the beginning of the season.

“But our guys are just very focused and just go about their business,” he added. “Wake up, take care of our business today. And then we still got to get our guys back to Ann Arbor and then wake up tomorrow and take care of business again.”

Remaining undefeated is the goal each week

Each weekend, Michigan football quarterback JJ McCarthy and his Wolverines have the same goal in mind, regardless of that day’s headlines: go undefeated. James Franklin has emphasized a “1-0” mentality at Penn State for quite some time now, and it is clear that the Maize and Blue have done the same.

“(Winning) is our goal going into every season — every single week is just going 1-0,” he said. “And you know, just stacking those 1-0 wins. We’re held down focusing on every single day and getting better because that’s what’s gonna get us there. And yeah, just winning is the most important thing.”

While Michigan football has this weekend off, the Wolverines will face Purdue next Saturday before ending the year with a crucial three-game stretch: Penn State, Maryland, and Ohio State.
