Michigan football will be without head coach Jim Harbaugh for the first three weeks of the upcoming season due to a self-imposed suspension by the University of Michigan. Today, Harbaugh and interim head coach Jesse Minter had a chance to speak with the media before the team’s Week 1 matchup against East Carolina this weekend. During the press conference, Minter discussed how his team has been handling the news of the Harbaugh suspension and more.
How is Michigan football handling the news of Jim Harbaugh being suspended?
Jim Harbaugh is undoubtedly the central figure of the Michigan football program. Although he is set to serve a three-game suspension this year, he will still be allowed to coach for the other six days of the week, minimizing the stress on the program as they head into the season. Nonetheless, Jesse Minter emphasized how the team and coaching staff are addressing the announcement of Harbaugh’s suspension.
“I think it puts a little bit of a chip on our shoulder for Coach Harbaugh,” Jesse Minter said of the Michigan football program’s reaction to Jim Harbaugh being suspended. “Not to get into all that about it, but we certainly want to play well for him and want to do well for him. So that’s really the message, is Coach (Jim Harbaugh) has us so well trained and ready to ready to play in this opener, that let’s prove him right, let’s play the way that he’s trained us to be ready to play.”
Jesse Minter making the best of a bad situation
While Jim Harbaugh’s suspension is undoubtedly unfavorable news for Michigan football, it’s difficult not to feel pleased for second-year defensive coordinator Jesse Minter. He will have the opportunity this weekend to showcase his capabilities as a head coach to the nation. In this regard, Minter has expressed that the team is supportive and content for him.
“But then, personal note, yeah, the guys were excited and happy for me to get the opportunity, happy for the other coaches that are going to get the opportunity. And once again, it just speaks to the culture here and a lot of the offensive guys the same way. So I’m really excited. I think sometimes it’s funny like you go through camp and you’re really going against the offense all the time. But now to really really be able to like, ‘Hey, this is it.'”
Some new changes coming for Minter and the Wolverines
Jesse Minter is a defensive guy, though as a head coach, he will have to make calls on both sides of the football. While that is uncharted territory for Minter — especially without OC Sherrone Moore, who is suspended Week 1 — he is thrilled that the Michigan football offense is in the condition that it is in.
“There’s not a quarterback, there’s not an offense that I would rather have than our offense and the feelings that I have for (JJ McCarthy) and his ability to lead our offense,” Minter said. “All the positions — certainly the guys voted captain, our offensive line — to be able to really lean on those guys, that’s big for me at this moment is to have the leadership and the seniority that we have on offense to be able to lean on those guys in this situation.”
While no one is happy that Jim Harbaugh is being suspended, Michigan football is doing its best to make good of a bad situation. Even though their 9th-year head coach will not be on the sideline this weekend, look for the Wolverines to come out swinging as they begin their 2023-24 national title campaign against East Carolina.
