This weekend is a big one for the 2024 recruiting efforts of Michigan football, the defending Big Ten Champions. A few of the program’s top targets, such as four-star linebacker Jacob Smith, are on campus right now, and there is no doubt that Jim Harbaugh and company are pushing for a commitment to further bolster their second-ranked recruiting class. Yesterday, a new major crystal ball was placed, indicating that there’s a huge commitment in the works.

New Michigan football crystal ball for major four-star EDGE Jacob Smith

Jerod Smith committed to Michigan football a few weeks ago — he is a four-star linebacker in the 2024 class and gave the Wolverines a boost in the rankings all the way to No. 1. Since then, Georgia has taken that title, but the Maize and Blue are still at No. 2 overall, ahead of Ohio State (3), Penn State (7), and more.

Yesterday, Brian Dohn — a top insider for 247 Sports — placed a new crystal ball for Michigan football to land Jerod Smith’s four-star brother, Jacob Smith, who is on campus this weekend.

The Smith brothers have both been high-priority targets for Jim Harbaugh and the Wolverines, making this a huge step in the right direction as long as it comes to fruition. For some time, it was thought that Jacob Smith was leaning towards Kentucky; however, his brother’s commitment and other outside factors have pushed Michigan into first place.

So far, Dohn is 100% accurate (27/27) on crystal balls in the 2024 recruiting class; this doesn’t guarantee anything, but it is an incredible sign of what may lie ahead for Michigan football.

The composite rankings place Jacob Smith as a four-star EDGE target, standing at nearly 6-foot-5 and weighing over 230 pounds right now. Smith is ranked as the No. 210 recruit in the cycle, the No. 18 EDGE, and the No. 3 recruit in the state of Connecticut. If the Wolverines land him, Smith would become Michigan’s 18th hard commit and bring the Maize and Blue one step closer to regaining the No. 1 spot in the class rankings.
