Recently, Michigan football finished its spring practices and camps, shifting all attention to a new stage of the offseason: official visits and summer recruiting. Still, the 2023 season is around 90 days from kicking off, and the hype surrounding Jim Harbaugh and the Wolverines is building right now. Recently, Athlon Sports released its top 25 rankings, and Michigan is ranked among the country’s best programs, placing the Maize and Blue with the other national championship contenders.

Where is Michigan football in the newest top 25 rankings?

From JJ McCarthy to Donovan Edwards, Blake Corum, the offensive line, and much more, few teams (if any) can match the talent and experience of the 2023 Michigan football roster. On top of that, the Wolverines have an experienced coaching staff led by longtime Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh. Harbaugh has led the Maize and Blue to two consecutive Big Ten title game victories, wins over Ohio State, and appearances in the College Football Playoff.

Currently, no team in the Big Ten has better odds to win the conference, although a few teams appear to have a greater shot at the 2023-24 national championship than Michigan football. This fall is highly anticipated, and the expectations in Ann Arbor have never been higher.

In Athlon Sports’ recent top 25 rankings, Michigan football is ranked No. 2, trailing only the defending national champion Georgia Bulldogs, who claimed the 2023 title with a score of 65-7 over TCU.

national championship or bust for the Maize and Blue

Heading into the year, Michigan football seems to be a consensus No. 2 team. The Maize and Blue have been defying trends over the past few seasons, and this fall, Jim Harbaugh could add the ultimate award to his trophy case: a CFP National Title. Michigan has not won a title in nearly three decades, and winning one in the modern era of college football would be a massive step for the Wolverines’ program as a whole.
