The Wolverines‘ offense is interesting — second-year play-caller Sherrone Moore commands one of the most talented, yet sometimes less-than-exciting, units in the country right now. Even though Michigan football quarterback JJ McCarthy is a top Heisman Trophy contender right now, and the run game is nationally renowned as the best in the land, Michigan still has yet to truly pick a main identity. According to McCarthy, this is all a part of his team’s unique approach to offense — an approach that has been deemed their “balcony view.”
Michigan football quarterback explains unique approach
Sherrone Moore and JJ McCarthy have been on their game this year, though there have been some road bumps along the way thus far. That said, over the past two games (a 45-7 win at Nebraska and a 52-10 win at Minnesota), it’s clear that the Wolverines’ offense has come into its own.
Recently, Michigan football QB JJ McCarthy — a second-year starter for the Maize and Blue — talked to Joel Klatt of FOX Sports about Michigan’s unique and balanced approach to offense and more.
“That was actually one of the focal points going into fall camp, just the why behind everything,” JJ McCarthy said, talking about the Michigan football offense this fall. “Coach (Sherrone Moore) likes to call it, ‘seeing the play from a balcony view.’ Not just thinking about who’s getting the ball and where the ball’s going, but the why behind each and every play. The why behind our philosophy as an offense.
“Our guys have really bought into our four pillars,” he said. “Which are: maximum effort, precise execution, protecting the football, and (JJ blanked on the final pillar). But, just sticking to the four pillars that our offense has really emphasized and focused on this year is huge for our success.”
JJ McCarthy, Sherrone Moore locked in on winning the national title
JJ McCarthy added that Sherrone Moore and the Michigan football offense are all-in on winning the national title this year. At the same time, the Wolverines know that, in order to get to the title game in January, their battles must be won on a daily basis.
“We are so in the present moment and focused on how we can be a (national) championship team this practice and going into Wednesday’s practice,” the junior Michigan football quarterback said. “I think as the games progress on, this is just another stepping stone in our journey of becoming the best we can possibly be.”
This weekend, Sherrone Moore and JJ McCarthy will lead Michigan football into a Week 7 bout against the Indiana Hoosiers at home. It will be the Wolverines’ seventh game of the year and fifth home game (of seven) this fall — Michigan still has Purdue and Ohio State at the Big House next month. It’s also worth noting that, next weekend, Michigan hits the road to East Lansing for a Week 8 game against the Michigan State Spartans.
