Since fall camp, Michigan football sophomore cornerback Amorion Walker — who flipped from wide receiver to cornerback over the offseason — has been out or limited with an injury. While Walker is yet to see the field very often this fall, it sounds like he has been making some great strides in the film room and on the practice field; in fact, this weekend, defensive backs coach Steve Clinkscale suspects that Michigan fans will see Walker get an increased workload against Minnesota.
Michigan football sophomore getting more snaps after injury
Amorion Walker, who committed to Michigan football as a three-star wide receiver, yet appears to be excelling as a cornerback right now, is likely going to get a bit more action this weekend. Last weekend, Walker hit the field for the first time this fall, getting four snaps against Nebraska during Michigan’s 45-7 win.
“This week, we want to add a couple more snaps for him (Amorion Walker),” Steve Clinkscale said on Wednesday. “If he’s feeling really good while he’s out there and he’s going, we’ll let him go. If he needs to continue to take it one step at a time, we’ll do that as well.”
Amorion Walker making great strides, says Steve Clinkscale
Amorion Walker has reportedly been a workhorse in the film room and beyond despite his injury. While Walker is yet to see much action in the Maize and Blue through five weeks of the 2023 season, the staff and players have been impressed with his progress to this point. Tomorrow, that could be evident when the sophomore defensive back takes the field against Minnesota.
“What he (Walker) did during the time that he was out has helped him be able to step right back in it,” Clinkscale added. “He was in every meeting, watching all the film, taking notes, answering questions, and taking the quiz. Every week he’s taken the quiz I give the guys that were playing, regardless of him being out there. He knows all the tips and reminders. That has helped him when it’s time to go out there and play.”
Michigan football gets a lot of upside with Walker
Amorion Walker has been labeled as a physical freak since making the switch to cornerback — he is tall, fast, and physical, all things that Michigan football is looking for at defensive back. If Walker can get back to 100%, he is expected to make a notable splash for the Maize and Blue.
“… He’s got a great upside,” Clinkscale said. “He’s very a very good man coverage (cornerback) — he’s long, and he’s very fast. We continue to teach him the zone concepts and things like that. It will be his biggest mountain to climb, but he’s doing a very good job with that.”
Keep an eye out for No. 1 on defense tomorrow, as it appears that the Michigan football sophomore standout will get an increase in reps six weeks into the 2023 season.
