Michigan football: Wolverines’ defensive backfield is huge

Heading into the season, size is a non-issue for the Michigan Wolverines’ defensive backfield.

Heading into the season, one of the only flaws in the Wolverines’ roster is its defensive backfield. Michigan football is losing a lot of talent at the cornerback spots, and was looking a bit thin until former three-star wide receiver Amorion Walker was converted to a defensive back. According to Jim Harbaugh, he thinks Walker will earn a starting role opposite of Will Johnson, who is Michigan’s starting corner.

One thing has become clear so far this spring: Michigan football has a massive defensive backfield.

Michigan football brings loads of defensive back size into 2023 season

Michigan football is stacked on both sides of the ball, and moving Amorion Walker to corner might have fixed the Wolverines’ issue with cornerback depth. It also created a new problem for opposing defenses: how are they going to throw over Michigan’s massive secondary?

Amorion Walker is a rising sophomore in the Maize and Blue, and stands at an incredible 6-foot 3-inches tall. Somehow, Walker is not even the second-biggest defensive back on Michigan’s roster. Across the field from Walker will be former five-star prospect Will Johnson, who had an incredible season a year ago. Johnson, Michigan’s CB1 this year, also stands at 6-foot 3-inches tall.

The tallest defensive back on the field will be Michigan standout safety Makari Paige (6-foot 4-inches tall), who had himself a notable year with the Wolverines in 2022 as well. These three massive defensive backs are going to become an issue for opposing offenses — especially ones like Penn State, Michigan State, and Ohio State, who will all try to throw the ball on the Michigan Wolverines’ defense.

It appears that, yet again, Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh has successfully addressed a massive roster concern months in advance of a new season.
