The Michigan football cornerback room was a top area of concern a few months ago, as numerous Wolverines defenders were on their way out the door via the NFL Draft. Now, ahead of summer ball, the Maize and Blue appear to be in far better shape after Amorion Walker converted from wide receiver to defensive back, and transfer portal corner Josh Wallace announced his commitment to Jim Harbaugh’s Wolverines.

Currently, the starting role opposite sophomore Will Johnson is open, and both Josh Wallace and Amorion Walker seem to be top contenders. Amorion Walker is one of the most athletic players in college football, though he doesn’t have much experience at defensive back and is still learning the ins and outs heading into the 2023 season.

While spring practice reports were largely positive for this new Michigan football cornerback, Walker had a rough game in the spring game, which appeared to be quite telling about his development. Nevertheless, according to Michigan coach Steve Clinksdale, Amorion Walker is right where he needs to be ahead of the Wolverines’ summer practices.

“I feel he’s right where needs to be,” Steve Clinkscale said of Amorion Walker on the ‘In The Trenches’ podcast. “He had a pretty solid beginning of spring, had a little bit of a roller coaster up and down … now he’s fighting his way back up. That’s what you need to do. As a corner, it shouldn’t be all rosy … they know. There are times you’ve lost a game for the team. I’ve been beat in a situation and I never forget about it. I’m 45, still remember times I got beat back in the ‘90s. It’s never going to go away.”

Amorion Walker is a player of great interest for Michigan football fans heading into the 2023 season as he competes for a starting role. With just over 50 days remaining until Michigan takes the field to kick off their 2023 campaign, there is hope that Amorion Walker will be fully prepared by then and will get his first meaningful in-game opportunities as a cornerback for the Michigan Wolverines.
