Last week, on Thursday, Michigan Wolverines football defensive play-caller Jesse Minter took to the podium to address the media during fall camp. There, we got a taste of how things are going for a key position group for the Wolverines — Minter broke down progress and more regarding the team’s edge rushers.

Michigan Wolverines football fall camp update on the edge rusher position

The edge rusher position is one that Jim Harbaugh and his Michigan Wolverines football program have relied on quite a bit since he took over as head coach in 2015. Over the past few seasons alone, the Maize and Blue have seen some elite edge rushers pass through the program — Aidan Hutchinson and David Ojabo (2021), as well as Mike Morris (2022) have been all-stars in Ann Arbor.

Now, many new faces — such as Jaylen Harrell and Braiden McGregor — will need to pick up where other great edge rushers left off. So far, Jesse Minter is pleased with what he has seen from these pass-rush specialists during fall camp.

“We’re seven practices in, and I feel good about where we’re at with those guys,” Jesse Minter explained. “I think the biggest thing is you can tell the amount of work that they’ve put into it in those individual sessions for themselves outside of here. So they’ve worked really hard. I think the inside guys and the edge guys are working really well together.”

Jesse Minter identifies a rising star

With a lot of rising stars on the team right now, who has stood out to Minter thus far? A few players have been impressive during fall camp, yet Minter made sure to mention one specific edge rusher — senior Jaylen Harrell.

“Particularly Jaylen (Harrell), if you asked about it, he’s having a really good camp,” Minter continued. “He’s the same player from a — he’s very dependable. He does everything right. But he’s also starting to, I think, become even a better rusher. So, I look forward to seeing his production this year.”
