There are only a few remaining contenders for four-star transfer portal target Joey Slackman, a massive defensive end out of UPenn. Slackman, the No. 3 defensive line target on the market right now, is a major Michigan football transfer target, though the  SEC’s Florida Gators appear to be making a strong push as well, especially during his visit over the weekend.

The Florida Gators are not doing too great on the football field right now, losing seven games for three seasons in a row and even missing bowl season entirely this fall. That said, everything can change with a few major transfer portal additions, such as UPenn defensive lineman Joey Slackman, who 247 Sports ranks as the No. 22 overall player available in the portal right now.

Since announcing his plan to transfer schools, Michigan football has shown a lot of interest in Slackman, offering him early on in the process. In fact, there are a number of reports today stating that Slackman will be in Ann Arbor for a weekend visit in the coming days — it is expected that he will stay for multiple days. Last weekend, however, the four-star transfer target was in SEC Country for a visit with the Florida Gators.

Per a report from 247 Sports, Slackman feels as though he has a top-5 right now — though he is not leaving anyone off the table right now — which may include both Michigan and Florida. While it doesn’t sound like Slackman knows where he wants to land just yet, he said that “Florida is up there” in a post-Florida-visit interview last weekend.

The Wolverines have a lot of defensive line depth heading into the 2024 season, though adding a talent like Joey Slackman from the transfer portal would be massive. That being said, SEC programs like Florida and more are also quite interested, meaning Jim Harbaugh and his coaching staff have their work cut out for them when it comes to Slackman’s recruitment.
