The 2023 college football season is in full swing, but we still like to look ahead to the future every now and then. Recently, four-star Michigan football recruiting target Ryan Montgomery, an elite quarterback from Ohio, broke a passing record set by future NFL Hall of Fame quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.

Michigan football recruiting target breaks NFL legend’s record

Ryan Montgomery is a 2025 quarterback prospect for Findlay High School in Ohio — the same school that former Pittsburgh Steelers’ Super Bowl-winning quarterback Ben Roethlisberger attended. At the start of the 2023 season, Montgomery had an elite performance, shattering a program record that Roethlisberger set during his playing days many years ago.

During Findlay’s impressive victory over Sylvania Southview (OH), the elite Michigan football recruiting target went 32/26 for over 490 yards and six touchdowns — this stat line was good enough to overtake a record set by the NFL Legend back in 1999 (passing yards in a single game).

Wolverines remain a top school for four-star quarterback Ryan Montgomery

Right now, Michigan football is one of five remaining schools in Mongomery’s recruitment — the Wolverines sit alongside Florida, Penn State, South Carolina, and Georgia. Of his remaining teams, Michigan has the best odds of landing him, per the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine; Penn State is also among the top contenders right now.

Ryan Montgomery is rated as a four-star Michigan football recruiting target — he is ranked as the No. 241 player in the nation, the No. 18 quarterback in his class, and the No. 10 player in the state of Ohio for the 2025 recruiting class. While Bryce Underwood remains the Wolverines’ top priority in the 2025 class, Jim Harbaugh and the coaching staff have been keeping Montgomery quite interested thus far.

If Underwood is to head elsewhere, it seems that Michigan could make a huge push for Montgomery before National Signing Day next year.
