This fall, the Wolverines are looking to break through their glass ceiling and capture the program’s first-ever victory in the national championship game. When it comes to this year’s defense, one key player will be expected to step up and lead the Maize and Blue to bigger and better things than before — Michigan football senior defensive tackle, Kris Jenkins. Jenkins is a long-time Wolverine veteran, and with his newfound considerable weight gain, he appears poised to be a massive problem for the entire Big Ten conference in 2023.

Last year, Mazi Smith, one of the top leaders of Michigan’s elite defense, was a freak of nature defensive tackle and a first-team All-Big Ten selection. After being drafted in the first round of this year’s NFL Draft, Smith has moved on to the next level, leaving Kris Jenkins to lead the Wolverines in 2023.

Having a player of Jenkins’ caliber will be huge for Michigan football. In the run-heavy Big Ten conference, being able to clog rushing lanes and put pressure on the inside of the offensive line is essential for winning conference titles, just as Michigan has done in both of the past two seasons.

During his Michigan football career thus far, Kris Jenkins has appeared in 29 games with 18 starts along the Wolverines’ defensive line. Last year, he started all 14 games alongside Mazi Smith at defensive tackle, recording 54 tackles and 3.5 sacks. Heading into this season, he has gained weight and is currently listed at 6-foot-3, 285 pounds, according to the team’s website.

A strong interior defensive line is crucial for Michigan football this fall, and with Kris Jenkins leading the way, the Wolverines appear to be in phenomenal hands as they pursue a third-straight Big Ten title, a College Football Playoff berth, and more.
